Kayaking Bayou St. John: New Orleans’ Easiest Paddle

Kayaking the calm waters of Bayou St. John in New Orleans

Not every paddle needs a swamp. Bayou St. John runs four miles through the middle of New Orleans, from near City Park down toward Lake Pontchartrain, and it’s the spot for an easy urban paddle: no current, no boat traffic to speak of, and you’re never more than a few hundred feet from a coffee shop.

Why paddle here

It’s the low-commitment option. You can be on the water 15 minutes after deciding to go, paddle an hour at sunset past Mid-City porches and the old Spanish Custom House, and be done in time for dinner. Locals throw paddle picnics here; visitors use it as a warm-up before committing to a full swamp trip.

Practical notes

  • Easiest access is along Moss Street near City Park; several rental outfits launch from the grassy banks
  • Wind off Lake Pontchartrain picks up in the afternoon; mornings and evenings are calmest
  • Alligator sightings are rare here, this is the paddle for nervous first-timers
  • Bring water shoes; the banks are grass and mud, not docks
